Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program soon will accept applications

Wood County Energy Assistance Office will begin taking applications at various locations throughout Wood County starting Sept. 7.

The Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) is available to qualifying household to help in maintaining utility and heating services.

Who can apply?

To qualify for the Energy Assistance Program, household income must be below 60 percent of the Wisconsin State Median Income. Gross income for the prior three months is used to determine eligibility (see chart below), and there is no asset limit. Eligible households will receive a one-time heating season payment to help pay heat and/or electric costs.

The one-time WHEAP payment is based on the following factors: household income, the number of rooms in the home, the number of people on the household, the type of fuel used and the annual fuel usage

Where to apply

Wood County will be accepting energy assistance applications at outreach sites only. Applicants will be seen on a first come first serve basis. No appointments will be scheduled for the regular season applications during this time. Local outreach sites for the months of September and October will be at Wood County Courthouse on Sept. 7, Sept. 13, Sept. 21, Oct. 5, Oct. 12 and Oct. 18.

When coming to apply, please bring: Social Security cards for every person in the household, current fuel and electric bill, proof of income received in the three months prior to application, proof of child support paid or received within the last three months and proof of dividends and/or interest for previous two months (Form 1099 or bank statements).
