Where to help: Volunteer opportunities

One of the goals of United Way of Inner Wisconsin’s Volunteer Center is to recruit and match volunteers for non-profit organizations needing your help in south Wood and Adams Counties.  The following are this week’s volunteer opportunities.

Day of Caring: Fall is in the air and leaves will be starting to fall soon so that means it’s time for our annual Day of Caring. We are in need of many volunteers to make this day of raking yards for the elderly/disabled in our community successful. Get your family, friends, co-workers, church groups together and help our friends and neighbors have a yard they can be proud of. Free t-shirts and a hot lunch provided for all volunteers. For more information or to sign up your group contact Amy at the Volunteer Center. 715-421-0390 or amy@uwiw.org

Wisconsin Rapids Public Schools: The Wisconsin Rapids Public School is offering a Parenting with Love and Logic six-week class and is looking for volunteers for childcare. The classes will be held Thursdays starting Oct. 13 through Nov. 15 from 5:50 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. at Howe School.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters: The goal of the School Buddy Program is to create solid relationships between volunteers from our community and children from area schools by having our School Buddies meet once a week for a hour with a student. What children become involved in the School Buddy program?: Children are between first and sixth grade. We currently serve children attending the Wisconsin Rapids Elementary Schools and at the Baker Street Boys and Girls Club. A student is referred to the program because of difficulties with scholastic and/or social skills. Our program goal is to help any child in need of an additional friend or role model.

When do School Buddies meet?: School Buddies meet with a child on school grounds during designated school hours. School Buddies are asked to commit themselves to the program for at least one hour per week for the school year. We are looking for caring, consistent volunteers that are willing to spend a hour a week with a child. We encourage applications from high school age and up. Requirements: Commit to the program for one full school year, and be able to meet once a week for one-half to one hour. Must be able to provide own transportation to and from the meeting site. The applicant must also pass a screening process (background checks, interview).
