Around 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 11, an 8-year-old boy died as a result of being struck in the intersection of 14th and West Grand avenues in Wisconsin Rapids.
A half hour earlier, the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department responded to the scene where Maxwell Wipfli of Wisconsin Rapids had been struck by a black pick-up truck driven by 44-year-old Wellington Wert III of Appleton and was thrown approximately 75 feet after impact.
Based on the initial investigation, there was nothing criminal or reckless about the incident, said Lieutenant Brian Krykowski.
Wipfli, who was in the right-hand lane near the curb with his brother when struck by the west-bound truck on West Grand Avenue, was taken to Riverview Hospital where he was pronounced dead from the injuries to his head acquired in the accident.
Based on a number of factors, it has been determined that excessive speeding was not the cause for the accident and no charges have been filed, Krykowski said.
“It’s one of those tragic and unfortunate events,” he said.
The Wisconsin State Patrol is still investigating the incident.
The Wisconsin Rapids Fire Department Ambulance along with the Wood County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the accident that afternoon.
