Raiders shine in home gymnastics meet

While not in first place, Wisconsin Rapids coach Roseann Dorshorst was giddy about the outcome at the annual Raiders Classic gymnastics meet.

“Today was great, it exceeded my expectations,” said Dorshorst. “I was so happy to see how well we came together.”

The Raiders finished in fourth place at the Dec. 2 meet behind solid performances by Tabitha Dorshorst and Loren Abbrederis.

“They are right on track,” said Roseanne Dorshorst about the team’s top two performers. “We just need to clean some spots up. The skill level is there, we just need to touch it up finesse-wise.”

Dorshorst, junior, finished in second place in the all around competition with 35.225 points, while sophomore Abbrederis tied for third, 33.875.

“We had out ups and downs,” said Abbrederis, “but from this we can grow and as a team we can come closer. We can improve on everything.”

On the uneven bars, Dorshorst won with 9.175 points as Abbrederis finished in third place with 8.4 with River Falls’ Riley Claude between them in second with 9 points.

Claude won the all-around competition with 35.85 points.

The two Wisconsin Rapids anchors, both of whom competed in the state meet last season, are leaders in the meets and during practice, Roseanne Dorshorst said.

“The also help daily in practices,” she said. “They are just so motivational.”

The team, which includes plenty of new faces, will learn from the meet, Dorshorst said.

“We lost some seniors last year and have a lot of new kids this year,” she said. “We placed far better than we thought we would.”

In the vault, Abbrederis and Tabitha Dorshorst were first and second with 8.95 and 8.9 points, respectively. Dorshorst was the team’s only Top 5 finisher in the balance beam with 8..55 points for fifth place, while she was also fifth in the floor exercise with 8.6 points.

“I was very happy with the way I performed individually,” said Dorshorst. “I threw out some new skills that I haven’t used before.”

The first meet helped bring the team together, she said.

“It was really important that we came in as a team,” Dorshorst said. “To have the team really support us and behind us it makes us all better.”
