Robert Dean “Bob” Heuer Sr., 93, passed away Sunday (Dec. 11, 2011) at Edgewater Haven Nursing Home, Port Edwards.
A family memorial service and inurnment at Calvary Cemetery will be held in May. Cremation rites were accorded by Mid-Wisconsin Cremation Society, Higgins Funeral Home, Wis. Rapids. Memorials may be made to St. Peter & Paul Church, Wis. Rapids.
Robert was born July 25, 1918, in Pittsville, WI, the son of Lindore and Rosalie Grenier Heuer. He married Jeannette A Brayback of Auburndale on May 24, 1941. They had eloped to Kahoka, MO and later had a wedding at St. Peter and Paul Church. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year. Jeannette survives and is living at Edgewater Haven until her move to Bloomington, IL at the end of December.
Robert graduated from Pittsville High School and then attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, playing on the school’s baseball team. He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II, with an honorable discharge. He was a Fourth Degree in the Knights of Columbus Assembly 1218 in Wis. Rapids for 47 years.
He was a successful entrepreneur in the retail grocery business. He owned and operated two Super Valu grocery stores located on 8th Street and Baker Dr. during the 1950′s and 60′s and employed over 70 people from the Wisconsin Rapids area. Over the years, many of these employees spoke of Bob as being one of the best employers they ever worked for. They remembered his whistling and knew what they should be doing when they heard it. After retirement he worked for Pranges/Younkers and General Business Services Inc. for many years. He was an avid wood carver, especially his unique and beautiful birds and ducks that many enjoy today. He loved music and started playing the cornet in the 6th grade at West School in Waukegan, IL. He also played as 1st Cornet with the 60 piece city wide band at the Chicago Symphony Hall. He loved to garden and fish and was a loyal Green Bay Packers fan.
Also surviving are four children, Rick, Wis. Rapids; Tom, Las Vegas; Mary (Jim) Allen, Bloomington, IL; Robert F (Carol), Wis. Rapids; one sister, Loretta (George) Yeager, Nekoosa;
10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family is thankful to Edgewater Haven NH for the great care Dad received from this past April through his final day.
