Creative writing students from several Wisconsin high schools were honored at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point this month as part of the 2011 Writers’ Workshop.
The annual event celebrates student writing through writing workshops and UW-Stevens Point scholarship prizes for the top writers in the categories of poetry, children’s literature, environmental formal essay, informal/familiar essay, fiction/short story and speculative fiction.
The event is sponsored by Christopher Cirmo, dean of UW-Stevens Point College of Letters and Science, and directed by Patricia Gott, associate professor of English. The workshops were led by Elizabeth Felt, associate lecturer of English; Per Henningsgaard, assistant professor of English; Becky Lorenz-Schumacher, lecturer of English; Larry Morgan, assistant professor of English; Ingrid Nordstrom, a UW-Stevens Point alumna writer; Pat Rothfuss, a UW-Stevens Point alumnus and New York Times bestselling author; and two UW-Stevens Point students, Spencer Hupf and Alex Snyder.
Each category included a senior scholarship winner, senior scholarship alternates and juniors who earned A-ratings.
The participating schools and student honorees of the 2011 Writers’ Workshop are listed by hometown:
Nekoosa: Nekoosa High School, with accompanying teacher Abbe Bredl – Brett Pongratz, fiction/short story A-rating.
Wisconsin Rapids: Lincoln High School, with accompanying teacher Nicole Reetz – Jason Khang, poetry scholarship third alternate; Leah Schaak, poetry scholarship fifth alternate; Shane Stein, poetry A-rating.
