Two teenagers are currently in custody as a result of stealing a vehicle.
Around 4:54 a.m. on Jan. 12, a night shift sergeant for the Wisconsin Rapids Police Department noticed a vehicle operating with headlights off while the sergeant was patrolling Sampson Street near Elm Street, according to the press release from authorities.
The sergeant turned to follow the vehicle when two men exited the vehicle and ran. Following their footprints in the fresh snow through backyards and over fences, officers found the two men outside an apartment building at the 1900 block of First Street South.
After talking with the two men, one who was an 18-year-old from Wisconsin Rapids and the other who was a 14-year-old from Minnesota, authorities came to find the vehicle was stolen from the 400 block of Taylor Avenue in Wisconsin Rapids and other items had been stolen as well.
Charges referred to the District Attorney’s Office include operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent and possession of stolen property. The 14-year-old male also had additional charges of capious, a juvenile version of a warrant, from Minnesota, and charges of party to a crime operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent and two counts of possession of stolen property have been referred to the Department of Human Services.
The 18-year-old was arrested and transported to the Wood County Jail while the 14-year-old was taken into custody and transported to a juvenile detention facility.
