MSTC to host financial aid preparation workshop

Students looking for financial resources to attend college may find filling out federal financial aid forms to be a daunting task.  Assistance will be available at College Goal Wisconsin at Mid-State Technical College’s Wisconsin Rapids Campus on Feb. 18.  Event registration begins at 2 p.m. in the A Building (main entrance).  A short financial aid presentation is scheduled at 2 p.m. and volunteers will be available from 2 – 4 p.m. for individual assistance.

Students in attendance will be entered in a drawing for a chance to win a $350 scholarship (one winner per workshop site) and $1,000 scholarship (one winner over all sites).

College Goal Wisconsin is a free state-wide event held in 29 locations on Feb. 18 and 19.  MSTC is a three-year host of this event designed to help college bound students and/or their parents complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  Any current or prospective Wisconsin college student who needs financial aid for post-secondary education should attend this event.  Of those who attended last year, 97 percent indicated the event information received was worth the effort of attending.

The application is used to determine eligibility for all federal and state grants, student loans and college work study.  Financial aid departments always recommend that students apply as early as possible, to ensure they have the proper amount of time to provide any required additional information and paperwork.  According to the Wisconsin Higher Education Aids Board students in Wisconsin’s Technical Colleges received 119,535 various financial aid awards totaling more than $292 million for the 2010-11 academic year.  Mid-State Technical College disbursed $887,741 in state funds to students during the 2010-2011 academic year.

Attendees should visit www.CollegeGoalWI.org for more information and a list of what to bring to the event.  High school students are strongly encouraged to attend with a parent or guardian.  Participants should bring their most recent completed federal tax return; current value of assets (cash, checking, savings, investments, and business/farm holdings); 2011 W-2 forms; 2011 untaxed income such as child support and veteran non-educational benefits; and, any questions regarding the financial aid process.

“This is an opportunity to get your FAFSA completed early, which is a key element in determining funding for college,” said MSTC Financial Aid Supervisor Mary Jo Green in the press release.
