A bank teller and a substitute teacher will soon embark on an adventure that will not only satisfy their wanderlust but assist a developing country as well.
Olivia and Matthew Nelson will leave for a mission with the Peace Corps on April 1.
On April 1, Matthew Nelson and his wife, Olivia, will travel to Peace Corps headquarters and will fly out of either Washington D.C. or Philadelphia, to Azerbaijan, located between Russia and Iran, for a 27 month commitment.
“It’s been a dream of ours to travel and do humanitarian work,” said 24-year-old Matthew.
For the couple, the adventure began with an 18 month application process.
“It is an extensive application to fill out,” said Matthew, a John Edwards High School graduate.
Olivia, who is a Lincoln High School alumni, has been assigned to assist teaching English at a university while Matthew has been designated to become a community and economic development advisor working with an undetermined company to help develop western business practices. Their roles will begin after living three months with a host family learning the language and culture of the country.
A government-run volunteer organization, the Peace Corps will let the couple immerse themselves into the foreign culture, as opposed to just traveling as a tourist, Olivia said.
