Volunteer Opportunity Column for March 20

One of the goals of United Way of Inner Wisconsin’s Volunteer Center is to recruit and match volunteers for non-profit organizations needing your help in south Wood and Adams Counties.  The following are this week’s volunteer opportunities.

LEADER CENTRAL:  We are launching our online clothing store this coming summer in Mosinee.  The C.F.A.C Store (Clothing For A Cause) will be available to underprivileged individuals and families to either purchase clothes at or near yard sale prices or receive clothes for free, depending on the individual or families need. We will also ship the clothes to these individuals and families for FREE! All profits and donations for The C.F.A.C Store will be used to keep the store running and to cover shipping costs. We need volunteers to help with our clothing inventory and building the storage for it. We need people to help us separate, fold, scan, photograph, and upload clothing onto our online clothing store.  We are also looking for volunteers with carpentry skills.  We prefer volunteers with carpentry experience, but if you know how to use a power drill, circular saw, and know how to hammer a nail, then we can use you.

LITERACY COUNCIL OF WOOD COUNTY:  Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks including working on mailings, updating brochures, recycling paperwork, accounting/bookkeeping, publicity and social media.  Tutors are also needed in the areas of reading, computers, math, ESL and budgeting.  If you are interested in tutoring but would like to start small, consider becoming a testing volunteer.  Testing volunteers distribute Adult Basic Education Tests to clients, times them and grades the tests.  These tests help clients work towards receiving a GED.  Additionally, the Literacy Council is looking for an attorney to serve on the Board of Directors.

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL (WISCONSIN RAPIDS POLICE DEPARTMENT):  18 volunteers are needed to participate in a “Walking School Bus” to Mead Elementary School.  Volunteers escort groups of children to school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  The program starts April 9, 2013 and lasts until the end of the school year (possibly continuing for summer school) and starting back up during the 2013-2014 school year (until winter).  Mead Elementary School is the first location selected for this program with hopes of extending it to other schools in the district.  There are three routes and two volunteers are needed per route per day.  Volunteers can select the days they participate or take all three days.  Hours are 7:30am to 8:25am (mornings only).  Volunteers must agree to a background check, need to be able to walk up to one mile and be available for a 1-2 hour training session.

The Volunteer Center is looking for nominees to be honored at the 2013 Volunteer Recognition Breakfast!  Deadline April 9, 2013.  The Volunteer Recognition Breakfast will be April 23, 2013, 8am at the Hotel Mead.  For more information, visit www.uwiw.org.
